A Busy Amenity Lake Turned from Liability into Asset
The Challenge
Henderson Lake is a 100-year-old manmade lake of about 25 hectares in Lethbridge, Southern Alberta. Sitting at the heart of Henderson Park, the lake is surrounded by amenities including parklands, walkways, Japanese gardens and a golf course – exactly the kind of mixed recreational environment many hotels and resorts aspire to.
Over time, the lake became heavily enriched with phosphorus from irrigation water, the surrounding golf course, parklands, bowling greens and stormwater, resulting in persistent problems that traditional approaches couldn't solve.
Previous Failed Attempts
The City of Lethbridge had already tried multiple approaches:
  • Live liquid microorganisms
  • Mechanical mixers ("solar bees")
  • Grass carp introduction
  • Aeration systems
Despite these efforts, phosphorus levels remained stubbornly high, and water quality continued to deteriorate with persistent cyanobacterial blooms, prolific weed growth and strong, unpleasant odours.
The Phoslock® Solution
In April 2016, 64 tonnes of Phoslock® were applied over five days. The objective: bind soluble phosphorus, reduce the frequency of algal blooms and significantly improve the visual and ecological condition of the lake. Application was carried out from boats using a slurry system to distribute the product evenly, with an extensive monitoring programme measuring water quality before and after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will our guests notice the treatment?
There may be short periods where parts of a lake or path are restricted for safety while we work, and some temporary visual effects immediately after application. We schedule around your quieter times and communicate clearly so any impact on guests is minimal and well-managed. Most applications can be completed with minimal guest disruption.
Is this safe for wildlife?
Phoslock® has been used in many recreational and amenity lakes worldwide when applied correctly within regulatory guidelines. We assess each site individually and only recommend treatment where it's compatible with the existing ecology and any protected species on site. The product has been extensively tested for environmental safety.
Can you treat ornamental ponds near guest areas?
Often, yes – but we'll confirm based on size, design, access and how guests interact with them. We may combine Phoslock® with other measures like improved filtration or circulation for smaller features. Each ornamental water feature is evaluated on its individual characteristics.
Do we have to drain or empty the lake?
No. Phoslock® is typically applied to the waterbody in place. We don't need to drain or empty lakes and large ponds to treat them. This is one of the key advantages of the Phoslock® approach – minimal disruption to your property operations.
How long will the results last?
That depends on how much new phosphorus comes in from run-off, inflows, wildlife and other sources. Phoslock® targets the phosphorus already in the system; if we also help you reduce incoming loads, you can expect a longer, more stable improvement. We'll set realistic expectations for your specific site based on our assessment.
Will this replace our existing maintenance contractor?
No. We prefer to work alongside your existing grounds, spa and maintenance teams. Think of us as your specialist water quality arm, giving them a more stable system to work with. Collaboration with your existing team typically produces the best long-term results.
Is this only for high-end five-star properties?
Not at all. While our standard is high, we tailor solutions to realistic budgets and priorities. Many clients start with a single key waterbody (such as the main hotel lake) and expand over time as they see the results and understand the value.
